EV Charger Rebates in Apex, NC: Town of Apex Electric Customers vs Duke Energy Customers

Which Apex Homes Qualify for an EV Charger Rebate

EV Charger Installers of Apex wrote this guide because any answer about an EV charger rebate in Apex, NC starts with your power company, not the hardware. Apex stands apart in the Triangle. The town runs its own electric utility, and homes across the street from each other can be billed by different companies. Town of Apex Electric customers fall outside Duke's program, while Duke customers around town can claim up to $1,133 toward the wiring.

Why homeowners choose us:

  • North Carolina license on every install
  • Apex Electric or Duke confirmed before any rebate talk
  • Town of Apex permit pulled and inspected
  • Free written estimates for every EV charger job

Our licensed North Carolina electricians read the utility name off your bill at the first visit, before anyone mentions a credit. Each invoice we write splits labor, materials and the permit fee onto separate lines, the format Duke's application calls for. For Apex Electric customers, that same invoice becomes the record of a permitted job. Either way, you know where you stand before any work is booked.

Which Utility Decides Your Apex EV Charger Rebate: Town of Apex Electric or Duke Energy

The Town of Apex has owned and operated its own electric distribution system since 1917. Town of Apex Electric serves homes inside the town limits, parts of Cary and some rural areas, and it belongs to ElectriCities, the group behind North Carolina’s public power towns. Duke Energy covers much of the surrounding area. Your street address alone does not settle the question, so the bill is where we look. Here is what each answer means for a charger:

  • A Town of Apex Electric bill. The Duke credit does not apply, and we found no town EV charger rebate when we checked in October 2026.
  • A Duke Energy bill. The Charger Prep Credit can apply, up to $1,133 for each EV registered at the address.
  • A home you just bought. Wait for the first bill before planning around any credit.
  • A bill you are unsure about. Send us a photo of its top section and we will read it with you.

Getting the utility right first saves money in both directions. A Duke household that never hears about the credit leaves up to $1,133 behind, and an Apex Electric household promised the credit ends up paying the full invoice anyway. Assuming every Triangle home qualifies is a known trap in Apex, because the town’s own customers are not eligible.

The Duke Energy Charger Prep Credit: An EV Charger Rebate for Apex-Area Duke Homes

Among the EV charger rebate NC homeowners come across, Duke’s credit is the one tied to the wiring itself, and it only covers direct Duke customers. The main terms, from Duke’s own program pages:

Credit detailWhat Duke’s terms say
AmountUp to $1,133, paid by check within 30 days
What it coversWiring, conduit, outlets, breakers and panel upgrades for the charger
What it leaves outThe charger, mounting it, and permits and fees
Who qualifiesDuke customers who own a single-family home or townhome
The vehicleA fully electric or plug-in hybrid, owned or leased, registered with the NC DMV at the address
Deadline120 days from the later of the final invoice or the EV registration
Work dateUpgrades finished after May 19, 2022

Make-ready work is Duke’s term for what the credit pays for, meaning a 240-volt outlet, wiring upgrades or panel upgrades and the labor for them. Hanging the charger, permit fees and service upgrades past the Duke meter fall outside it. Now and then the Duke service line feeding the house is undersized, which moves into Duke’s Line Extension Plan and outside the credit too. The charger can sit outdoors, as long as it connects to the home’s panel.

How Do Duke Customers Claim the Duke Energy EV Charger Rebate?

With the Customer Credit Option you choose the contractor, then send Duke the paid invoice and get a check. With the Contractor Credit Option, Duke helps pick the contractor and the credit shows up as a discount on the final bill. Duke pays one rebate per EV registered at the address. Duke customers can also look at the EV Overnight Advantage rate, which discounts charging from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Planning an EV Charger on Town of Apex Electric Service

Without the Duke Energy EV charger rebate, an Apex Electric customer pays the full install price, which runs $892 to $1,638 for most homes plus the charger itself. The good news is that newer Apex housing keeps most jobs near the bottom of that range. About seven in ten homes in town were built in 2000 or later, and their 200-amp panels rarely need an upgrade for one charger.

Leaving out the credit does not change how the job is built. A Tesla charger installation still runs on a dedicated 60-amp breaker, and a Level 2 unit from ChargePoint, Wallbox or Emporia still gets its own circuit. Where a home does need panel work, our EV charger panel upgrade options put load management or a subpanel ahead of a full service change. That order matters even more when no credit offsets the bill.

Apex Electric Rates and Overnight Charging

The town sets its own Apex electric rates, separate from Duke’s schedules. We could not confirm an EV or time-of-use rate from the town’s published rate documents, so call the town’s utility office before planning your charging around a cheaper overnight price. Your car or charger app can still schedule charging for whatever hours suit your household.

Apex Permits and Inspections for an EV Charger Rebate Claim

The Town of Apex requires a permit for added electrical wiring, devices or equipment, regardless of the job’s cost. Building Inspections & Permitting at 919-249-3418 issues it and inspects the finished circuit. For Duke customers, the approved permit goes in with the credit application, and an install without a permit forfeits the credit and may cause trouble with an insurance claim.

We file the permit, list its fee on its own invoice line and meet the inspector. Duke customers then have everything the application asks for: the form, the EV registration showing the home’s address, the itemized paid invoice and the approved permit. Apex Electric customers get the same permit and inspection, because the town requires them whether or not a credit is involved.

Timing matters for Duke customers. The 120-day window runs from the later of the final invoice or the EV registration, so a charger installed before the car arrives has time on its side. A charger added months after the car was registered is measured from the invoice. We hand over the paperwork on inspection day so the claim can go in right away.
